The Pros of Chewing
posted in TrainingGolden Retriever puppies love to chew, they are little chewing machines. As a breed Goldens tend to be a very oral and possess a manic desire to have something in there mouths. It is in there job description. It’s a natural and health canine habit that goes way back to their wolf ancestors who gnawed their way around the den. Chewing on bones and toys will satisfy your dog’s emotional needs as well as certain physical needs that are important to his health.
In puppies , chewing on hard objects stimulates the growth of their adult teeth. Chewing hard bones helps scrape away the plaque, which causes bad breath and serious dental problems. Mouthing and chewing are the most common Golden Retriever problems that you hear about. These actions should not be treated as a major issue. By mouthing and chewing on things is how Golden Pups learn about their enviroment. It is also a stress reliever.
Chewing is also a good therapy for loneliness. Dogs who are left alone during the day can get lonely, depressed, or anxious, and maybe all of the above. Your Golden probaly waits all day to hear you come through the door, a good bone or two helps a lonesome fellow pass the time away. No bones to chew? How about a sofa pillows or you favorite pair of shoes.
My own golden recommend these toys:
- Large Kong
- Large Kong Frisbee
- Braided rope:
- Nylabones and Gumabones
- Tennis Balls
Since Chewing is hard coded into goldens DNA, you are going to have to dig deep and just be patiant. It is going to take time to teach your Golden Retriever what he may and may not chew on. There are multiple solutions used to teach your Golden what is his.
Keeping your people stuff out of your puppies reach. This means keeping shoes, shirts picked up and put in a closed closet. No open trash cans to tip over. This will also make it look like you keep you house clean all the time.
Distract and redirect. When your golden decide to chew on a object he is not suppose to remove the obect from his mouth and with a firm voice say “drop it or Leave it”. When he releases it praise him and give him something that he can chew on.
Crate your puppy when you can not watch him. No matter how many rawhides, toys and chews you give him, a determined chew machine will still destroy your couch or what ever it can if he is left alone for too long. Crating is your guaranteed solution.
You can not cure the chewing habbit over night. You Golden puppy will need many many lessons and reminders be for he’s fully chewe-conditiones. After all the Golde Retriever was bred to retrieve and carry something in his mouth.
