Debbie Parkhurst poses with her dog, Toby, in Calvert, Md.We’ve heard miracle stories of dogs saving people from drowning, even going and finding help when we’re in distress. But this is a first known happening of a dog preforming the Heimlich maneuver.

Toby, a once abandoned two year old Golden Retriever went into action when his owner 45 year old Debbie Parkhurst of Maryland, began to choke. It was Friday afternoon and Parkhurst was snacking on sliced apples when an apple piece became lodged in her windpipe. After trying to dislodge the apple by smacking herself against a chair, she started hitting herself on the chest, which she thinks alerted Toby to the problem. It was then, that Toby pulled her to the ground and started jumping on her chest until the apple came out.

Parkhurst says “I want people to learn how to do the Heimlich maneuver, and I want ‘em to adopt dogs like him look at this - nobody wanted him and now look.” according to 3 News.

Parkhurst adopted Toby two years ago after he was rescued from a dumpster.
