The Five Minute Checkup
posted in HealthGolden Retrievers play and work hard, and not surprisingly, they occasionally hurt themselves. The best fives minutes that you can spend with your dog every week is performing a quick check up.
Check:
- Mouth for red, bleeding. swollen or pale gums, loose teeth, and bad breath
- Eyes for cloudiness or discolored “whites”
- Ears for redness, crusted tips and waxy build up
- Skin for parasites, hair loss, red spots, and lumps
- Feet for cuts, abrasions, split nails, bumps, or misaligned toes
Other things that you should do are:
- Check for matted hair
- Run you hands over you golden retriever’s body feeling the muscles and bones checking that they are symmetrical from one side to the other
- Watch your dog run and walk checking for signs of lameness, sore muscles or any behavioral change
- Weigh your dog and see if he is gaining or loosing weight
Doing this will not only give you the ability to know what you dog looks like when it is healthy, but your golden will love it to because you will be rubbing and petting it all over.
