Whenever anyone sees our boys, they figure they must be pretty good swimmers. Their webbed feet and waterproof coat are noticeable breed traits, but when they actually see the water in sight, that’s when they’re eyes sparkle. You see, it’s in a Golden Retriever’s blood to swim. They live to be in the water. If they could, they’d live in it. Whether it be a puddle, pond or pool, these water dogs know how to have fun.
Living in the city, it’s difficult for a Golden to enjoy a nice summertime cool down at the pool. So when we heard about the doggie paddle we were all about it. Each year, the pool closes to the public the day after Labor Day. Someone decided, that since the pool was being drained anyhow, why not let it go tot he dogs for the day? What a fantastic idea! So, the Saturday after Labor Day, we grabbed some floating toys and a few towels and we were on our way.
When we arrived, the boys must’ve known what we were about to let them do because they could hardly hold back their excitement. As soon as we entered the gate, they were like kids in a candy store. The smiles on their faces were incredible. This was the first time either of them had been in water above their knees, but they took off swimming in that pool like they did this everyday. For 3 hours they swam. They swam until their legs wouldn’t move anymore. And then they would float. Just enjoying the water all around them.
This was the first trip to the pool for the boys, but it wouldn’t be the last. For the next 3 years, we returned to the doggie paddle. And as long as they continue the tradition, our boys will be there.
