Grooming your Golden Retriever is a year-round job. It is more than just keeping your dog looking pretty. The entire process should be done once or twice a week, and will take you around a ½ an hour of time. Brushing your dog during shedding season will help to control shedding quite a bit.
When you groom your pet, you should always start with a good brushing. Brush his entire body, then once you have finished brushing you can switch to a comb to get out any loose hair that remains in the coat. Brushing your golden while following a pattern will make the grooming process easier. Always brush with the grain of the coat and start at his rear working small sections at a time. Work in small continuous sections, always brushing upwards and forward. Pay close attention to the soft light fur behind the ears and on the legs and tails these areas are more prone to matting.
Remove mats and tangles slowly without yanking so that you won’t hurt your dog. On larger mats, rub in a few drops of canine hair conditioner and then work gently with a mat rake. Although some people choose to use scissors and cut the mats, this is not recommended. Your Golden could jerk or move and you could injure your dog. Scissors aren’t recommended, as brushing and proper bathing will help to prevent matting of the hair better than anything else. Also a straight-across scissor cut will leave and unsightly line in the fur.
Grooming is an essential aspect to the health of every Golden Retriever. All it takes is a little bit of time from your day to groom your pet and keep him healthy. If you don’t have the time to groom your Golden, you can always take him to a professional. Whether you do it yourself or take your Golden to a pro - grooming is something that simply must be done.
