DSC_0026.jpg Whenever anyone sees our boys, they figure they must be pretty good swimmers. Their webbed feet and waterproof coat are noticeable breed traits, but when they actually see the water in sight, that’s when they’re eyes sparkle. You see, it’s in a Golden Retriever’s blood to swim. They live to be in the water. If they could, they’d live in it. Whether it be a puddle, pond or pool, these water dogs know how to have fun.

Living in the city, it’s difficult for a Golden to enjoy a nice summertime cool down at the pool. So when we heard about the doggie paddle we were all about it. Each year, the pool closes to the public the day after Labor Day. Someone decided, that since the pool was being drained anyhow, why not let it go tot he dogs for the day? What a fantastic idea! So, the Saturday after Labor Day, we grabbed some floating toys and a few towels and we were on our way.

Debbie Parkhurst poses with her dog, Toby, in Calvert, Md.We’ve heard miracle stories of dogs saving people from drowning, even going and finding help when we’re in distress. But this is a first known happening of a dog preforming the Heimlich maneuver.

Toby, a once abandoned two year old Golden Retriever went into action when his owner 45 year old Debbie Parkhurst of Maryland, began to choke. It was Friday afternoon and Parkhurst was snacking on sliced apples when an apple piece became lodged in her windpipe. After trying to dislodge the apple by smacking herself against a chair, she started hitting herself on the chest, which she thinks alerted Toby to the problem. It was then, that Toby pulled her to the ground and started jumping on her chest until the apple came out.

Parkhurst says “I want people to learn how to do the Heimlich maneuver, and I want ‘em to adopt dogs like him look at this - nobody wanted him and now look.” according to 3 News.

Parkhurst adopted Toby two years ago after he was rescued from a dumpster.

Cancer has life changing effects on all of us. It knows no boundaries as it attacks both humans and canines alike. Rebecca Reed and John Levy are scientists who spend their days at a biotech company working on cancer treatments. So it would come as little surprise that Rebecca’s 13-year old Allison Reed would have an interest in finding a cure for cancer in canines. Allison could have a lasting impact on future medical breakthroughs with her science fair project researching a cure for canine cancer.

Allison was inspired by her Golden Retriever, Sassy, who died from bladder cancer at the young age of three, when deciding on a topic for her science fair project. Read the rest of this entry »

Golden puppy taking a nap in his crate.Crate training your Golden Retriever can be very helpful to you in many ways. It is best to start crate training at a young age to get your dog used to his new den, but it’s certainly never too late to introduce crate training to your dog. Whether your Golden is a puppy or an adult, crate training may take some time and effort, but if you are consistent, you will be pleased with the outcome.

Not only is a crate a safe way of transporting your dog in the car, but it is also your dogs safe place. By properly train your dog to use the crate, he will think of it as his safe place and will be happy to spend time there. Before you begin the training, you will need to purchase a crate that is appropriate for your dog.

dsc_0373.jpgA Golden Retriever is making legal history in Connecticut.

It all started when Cassandra Reynolds went to drop off her children at her ex-husband’s, Brian Reynolds, home. While there, an argument broke out between them. As the argument continued and words were exchanged, according to Mr. Reynolds, his golden retriever, Riley, approached his Cassandra as she sat in the car and, as Mr. Reynolds claims, she kicked Riley with both feet across the yard. Riley yelped. Cassandra was arrested.

According to a report by Inside Edition Cassandra says she never kicked Riley. “I am not a danger to pets. I have pets. I love pets!”

With a new law that went into effect Oct. 1 in Connecticut, it allows laws to impose protective orders on behalf of pets as well as humans. And that’s just want the judge did in this case. Cassandra was shocked by the judge’s decision to issue a restraining order for her to not only stay away from her ex-husband and his new wife, but also to stay at least 100 yards away from Riley or face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
